Chromium Picolinate Dose for Blood Sugar: 0.7 mcg in Context
The chromium picolinate dose for blood sugar in most glucose studies was about 200 to 1,000 mcg a day, with mixed results. Sugar Defender lists 0.7 mcg of chromium per 1 mL serving, 2% of the Daily Value and 0.35% of the lowest studied dose. Chromium is not shown to lower anyone's blood sugar.

What is the chromium picolinate dose for blood sugar in studies?
Most glucose trials used about 200 to 1,000 mcg of chromium a day, mainly as chromium picolinate (NIH ODS, Chromium).
The results were mixed. A 2019 review found slight drops in fasting glucose and A1C in people with diabetes, of unclear clinical meaning, and no change in healthy people (NIH ODS, Chromium).
NCCIH lists chromium among the few supplements with only weak evidence for diabetes (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements).
So the studied dose is a range, not a target. No one has shown a dose that works for everyone.
How much chromium is in a Sugar Defender serving?
Each 1 mL serving lists 0.7 mcg of chromium, as chromium picolinate. The label shows it as 2% of the Daily Value.
That is the one single amount the label prints. The 200 mg herbal blend that follows has no breakdown.
Put 0.7 next to the studies: it is 0.35% of 200 mcg and 0.07% of 1,000 mcg. A bottle holds 60 servings, or 42 mcg in total, about a fifth of one day at the lowest studied dose.
How much chromium do adults need each day?
Adults need roughly 20 to 35 mcg a day. The Adequate Intake is 35 mcg for men aged 19 to 50 and 25 mcg for women aged 19 to 50, and the Daily Value is 35 mcg (NIH ODS, Chromium).
Most people get this from food. The Adequate Intake is a food-based target, not a treatment dose.
By that measure, 0.7 mcg is a sprinkle. It is neither a missing-nutrient fix nor a study dose, which puts it in a gap between the two.
| Amount | What it is |
|---|---|
| 0.7 mcg | One Sugar Defender serving (1 mL) |
| 25 mcg | Adequate Intake, women 19-50 |
| 35 mcg | Adequate Intake, men 19-50, and the Daily Value |
| 200-1,000 mcg | Range used in most glucose studies |
Is the chromium in Sugar Defender safe with medicines?
At 0.7 mcg the dose is small, but the caution still applies. Chromium may add to the effect of insulin and other diabetes drugs, which raises the chance of low blood sugar (NIH ODS, Chromium).
It may also reduce how well your body absorbs levothyroxine, a thyroid medicine (NIH ODS, Chromium). Ask your pharmacist about spacing.
Lows mean a reading under 70 mg/dL, with shaking, sweating, hunger, dizziness or a fast heartbeat (NIDDK, Low Blood Glucose). If it happens, take 15 to 20 g of fast carbohydrate and recheck in 15 minutes.
Never stop or change a diabetes or thyroid medicine because of a supplement. Tell your doctor about every product you take.
What does the sales page claim about chromium?
The sales page claims chromium "Reduces Obesity & Lowers Blood Pressure." No study of this product backs that line.
The mineral's own evidence is limited to the mixed glucose results above (NIH ODS, Chromium). A claim of that size, tied to a dose of 0.7 mcg, does not hold up.
To compare labels yourself, look for the number before the name. For more on this line, see the chromium picolinate page and the supplement facts breakdown.
FAQ01
Chromium dose questions
Is 0.7 mcg of chromium enough to matter?
It is far below the 200 to 1,000 mcg used in glucose studies and only 2% of the 35 mcg Daily Value. No evidence shows an effect at 0.7 mcg.
Does chromium picolinate lower blood sugar in healthy people?
Chromium does not appear to change glucose in healthy people, according to the NIH review. In people with diabetes the results are mixed, so talk to your doctor before trying any dose.
Can I take more chromium to make up the gap?
Do not stack extra chromium on your own. Studied doses were far higher than the label, but they were used in trials with monitoring. Ask your doctor first, especially if you use diabetes medicine.
Does chromium picolinate interact with thyroid medicine?
It may reduce levothyroxine absorption. If you take thyroid medicine, ask your pharmacist how far apart to take them and tell your doctor about the drops.
