Other blend lines
The Sugar Defender proprietary blend: six more lines, from grape seed to licorice
The Sugar Defender proprietary blend holds six lines without their own profile pages: grape seed (2nd), astragalus (6th), capsicum (10th), grapefruit seed (11th), raspberry ketones (13th) and monoammonium glycyrrhizinate, a licorice compound (18th). By label order they range from at most 100 mg down to about 11 mg per mL. None has good evidence for blood sugar.

Six lines01
What else is in the Sugar Defender proprietary blend?
Besides the ten profiled ingredients, the Sugar Defender proprietary blend lists six more lines: four plant extracts and two compounds.
They are spread through the list, from second place to eighteenth. That spread matters, because place sets how much each one can hold.
- Plant extracts: grape seed, astragalus root, capsicum fruit, grapefruit seed
- Compounds: raspberry ketones and monoammonium glycyrrhizinate
Dose math02
How much of each line is in the Sugar Defender proprietary blend?
No single amount is printed in the Sugar Defender proprietary blend. Each line holds at most 200 mg divided by its place, per 1 mL serving (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)).
The even split is about 9 mg. Grape seed, in second place, has the highest ceiling of the six at 100 mg.
| Line | Place | Most per mL | Research dose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grape seed extract | 2 | 100 mg | No set dose |
| Astragalus root extract | 6 | About 33 mg | No set dose |
| Capsicum fruit extract | 10 | 20 mg | 2-4 mg capsaicin a day |
| Grapefruit seed extract | 11 | About 18 mg | None found |
| Raspberry ketones | 13 | About 15 mg | 100-1,400 mg (supplements) |
| Monoammonium glycyrrhizinate | 18 | About 11 mg | None found |

What does research say about each of these Sugar Defender blend lines?
Research on these six Sugar Defender lines is thin, and none of it shows a blood sugar benefit at these amounts.
Grape seed has modest lipid data, capsicum one small glucose study, and raspberry ketones no human data on their own (NCCIH, Grape Seed Extract) (MSKCC, Cayenne (Capsicum)) (OPSS (DoD), Raspberry Ketone).

Caution04
Does the grapefruit seed extract in Sugar Defender interact with medicines?
It might, so ask a pharmacist. Grapefruit juice blocks a gut enzyme called CYP3A4, which lets some drugs build up too high (FDA, Grapefruit juice and drugs).
FDA names some statins, blood pressure, heart-rhythm, anti-anxiety and transplant drugs. Seed extract is far less studied than juice, and one serving holds at most about 18 mg.
If your drug carries a grapefruit warning, do not stop it. Ask your pharmacist whether the drops are fine for you.

Can the licorice compound in Sugar Defender raise blood pressure?
Possibly, in people who are sensitive. Monoammonium glycyrrhizinate is a salt of glycyrrhizin, the compound in licorice that can raise blood pressure (NCCIH, Licorice Root).
NCCIH says large or long-term use can cause an irregular heartbeat. People with high blood pressure may be at risk even from small amounts.
In the drops it is most likely a sweetener or flavor, at most about 11 mg per mL. If you have high blood pressure, ask your doctor first.
Evidence06
Do these Sugar Defender blend lines help blood sugar?
No. None of the six has reliable evidence for blood sugar, and most were never studied for it.
The closest is astragalus. A 2024 review of mostly low-quality studies hinted at added effect with metformin, but NCCIH finds no reliable evidence for any condition (NCCIH, Astragalus).
Astragalus
Avoid with autoimmune disease or drugs that suppress the immune system (NCCIH, Astragalus).
Capsicum
Can upset the stomach, and may add cough with ACE-inhibitor drugs (MSKCC, Cayenne (Capsicum)).
Raspberry ketones
No proof of safety or benefit for weight loss in people (OPSS (DoD), Raspberry Ketone).

Where do these lines sit on the Sugar Defender label?
All six sit inside the Proprietary Herbal Blend on the Supplement Facts panel. The crop at the top shows the start of it.

FAQ08
The Sugar Defender proprietary blend: questions people ask
Is grapefruit seed extract the same as grapefruit juice?
No. Juice comes from the fruit flesh; seed extract comes from seeds and pulp. FDA's drug warnings are about grapefruit juice (FDA, Grapefruit juice and drugs). Seed extract is less studied, so the safe move is to ask your pharmacist if any of your medicines carries a grapefruit warning.
Does Sugar Defender contain licorice?
Yes, as a compound. Monoammonium glycyrrhizinate is made from glycyrrhizin, the sweet part of licorice root. It is 18th of 22, at most about 11 mg per mL.
How much raspberry ketone is in Sugar Defender?
At most about 15 mg per mL, from its 13th place in the blend. Raspberry ketone supplements are sold at 100 to 1,400 mg a day (OPSS (DoD), Raspberry Ketone), and there is no human proof that they work for weight loss on their own.
Is the capsicum in Sugar Defender spicy?
Not noticeably for most people. Capsicum extract is 10th of 22, at most 20 mg per mL, and the label gives no capsaicin content. Stop if your stomach burns and tell your doctor.
Can I take Sugar Defender with an autoimmune disease?
Talk to your doctor first. NCCIH advises people with autoimmune diseases to avoid astragalus, and it may interact with immune-suppressing drugs (NCCIH, Astragalus). Astragalus is sixth in the blend, at most about 33 mg per mL.
Why is grape seed second in the Sugar Defender blend?
It weighs more than every line after it, so the maker put it second, as the label rule requires (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). It could hold up to 100 mg per mL. Grape seed is generally well tolerated, with modest, unsettled heart-health data (NCCIH, Grape Seed Extract).
