What is eleuthero and why is it used for fatigue?
Eleuthero is a woody shrub, also called Siberian ginseng, and its root is sold as a tonic. People take it hoping to feel less tired.
The name causes confusion. Despite the nickname, it is not true ginseng. Panax ginseng, which is also in the blend, is a different plant with its own research.
People reach for it when they feel run down, and it has a long history as a folk remedy. History is not the same as a trial, though, and tiredness has many causes.
The Sugar Defender label lists "Eleutherococcus Senticosus Root Extract" fifth of 22. The sales page adds the line "Increases Energy & Reduces Fatigue" beside it.

Does eleuthero reduce fatigue in studies?
Not clearly. Memorial Sloan Kettering says human studies of eleuthero are limited and more are needed (MSKCC, Siberian Ginseng (Eleuthero)).
Its blood sugar findings come from animal studies only. An NIH review of sports supplements found little or no performance benefit from eleuthero or Panax ginseng (NIH ODS, Exercise & Athletic Performance).
One trial used 800 mg a day. That is a single data point, not a guarantee, and it says nothing about this bottle.
The honest reading is that the energy line is a hope, not a result. If a product helped many people feel less tired, careful studies would usually show it. For eleuthero they mostly do not.

How much eleuthero is in Sugar Defender?
No more than 40 mg in each 1 mL serving, and probably less. The amount is not printed.
The 200 mg blend is listed from most to least by weight (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)). The fifth item can hold at most 200 divided by 5, which is 40 mg.
An even split among all 22 ingredients would be about 9 mg. At the ceiling, the daily intake is still only 5% of the 800 mg trial dose. The label directs one serving a day, so you cannot raise the amount without going past the directions.

Is eleuthero safe with heart medicine?
Not always. A case report found that eleuthero raised blood digoxin levels, and it may cause falsely high digoxin test results (MSKCC, Siberian Ginseng (Eleuthero)).
If you take digoxin, ask your doctor before any product that lists eleuthero. The same advice holds for any heart or blood pressure medicine.
The label also asks you to consult a physician first if you are pregnant or nursing, or if you take any other medication. That covers eleuthero along with everything else in the blend.
Fatigue can have medical causes, from poor sleep to thyroid or blood sugar problems. Ask your doctor about it, and do not stop a prescription because you started a supplement.

Sleep, movement and a medical checkup have better support than any single herb.
