Insulin Resistance Signs: What You Can and Can't Feel
Insulin resistance signs are often missing. Most people with insulin resistance or prediabetes feel fine, which is why a blood test finds it, not a symptom. About 97.6 million US adults had prediabetes in 2021 (NIDDK, Insulin Resistance & Prediabetes). Risk factors are a better guide than how you feel.

The short answer01
What are the signs of insulin resistance?
The honest answer is that there are often no signs. Insulin resistance and prediabetes usually give no symptoms, so many people learn about them from a routine test.
Insulin resistance means your cells respond poorly to insulin, and blood sugar can creep up over years. The CDC says an estimated 115.2 million US adults have prediabetes (CDC, National Diabetes Statistics Report). Many of them do not know it.
Tiredness, cravings and weight gain are common, but they have many causes. They are not proof of insulin resistance.
So what can you feel? Mostly nothing at first. That quiet start is the reason doctors lean on risk factors and lab numbers, and why guessing from symptoms leads many people astray in both directions.
Warning signs02
Which symptoms show up when blood sugar gets high?
When blood sugar stays high, symptoms of diabetes can appear. These are signs of high blood sugar, not of insulin resistance itself (CDC, Symptoms of Diabetes).
Common
Frequent urination, more thirst, more hunger, tiredness and blurry vision.
Type 2 extras
Slow-healing sores and numbness or tingling in the hands or feet.
Other
Frequent infections and unplanned weight loss.
See a doctor if you notice these. They call for a test, not a guess. Our guide to insulin resistance basics explains the process in more depth.
Risk03
Who is at risk of insulin resistance?
People are at higher risk if they are 45 or older, are active fewer than 3 times a week, have a parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes, or have overweight or obesity (CDC, Diabetes Risk Factors).
One risk factor does not mean you have a problem. Several together are a reason to ask for a test.
Think of the list as a prompt for a conversation, not a verdict. A person with none of these can still have prediabetes, and a person with all of them may have normal numbers.
- Age 45 or older
- Active less than 3 times a week
- A parent or sibling with type 2 diabetes
- Overweight or obesity
The good news is that the last two on the list respond to habits. Losing 5% to 7% of body weight helped high-risk people in the Diabetes Prevention Program (NIDDK, Insulin Resistance & Prediabetes).
Testing04
How do doctors check for insulin resistance and prediabetes?
Doctors check with blood tests for A1C or fasting glucose. These tests catch prediabetes, which is the stage that insulin resistance often leads to.
Prediabetes shows as an A1C of 5.7% to 6.4%, or a fasting glucose of 100 to 125 mg/dL. Diabetes starts at 6.5% or 126 mg/dL (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests).
- NormalA1C below 5.7%Fasting below 100 mg/dL
- PrediabetesA1C 5.7-6.4%Fasting 100-125 mg/dL
- Diabetes rangeA1C 6.5% or higherFasting 126 mg/dL or higher
Type an A1C or a fasting number to see its range. One test is not a diagnosis; a doctor confirms with a repeat test.
Ranges from NIDDK (NIDDK, Diabetes & Prediabetes Tests). About 115.2 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, and many do not know it (CDC, National Diabetes Statistics Report). A home meter is not a diagnostic test.
| Result | A1C | Fasting glucose |
|---|---|---|
| Typical | Below 5.7% | Below 100 mg/dL |
| Prediabetes | 5.7% to 6.4% | 100 to 125 mg/dL |
| Diabetes | 6.5% or higher | 126 mg/dL or higher |
A single result is not a diagnosis. Diagnosis needs confirmation, so repeat tests are normal.

Supplements05
Can a supplement fix insulin resistance?
No supplement is proven to fix insulin resistance. NCCIH finds little evidence that most supplements help in diabetes, and only weak evidence for a few (NCCIH, Diabetes and Dietary Supplements).
Habits do the heavy lifting here: more movement, steady sleep and weight loss for those who need it. Those are the steps with trial support.
Sugar Defender drops list 0.7 mcg of chromium. Chromium studies used 200 to 1,000 mcg a day, and no trial tested the drops.
Never stop or change a prescription because of a supplement. Talk to your doctor first.
FAQ06
Insulin resistance signs: quick questions
Can you have insulin resistance without symptoms?
Yes, and it is the usual case. Insulin resistance and prediabetes often cause no symptoms for years. A blood test such as A1C or fasting glucose is how most people find out.
Is a dark skin patch a sign of insulin resistance?
Our sources do not list it. Skin changes have many causes, so ask a doctor about any new dark or velvety patch. Do not self-diagnose from one skin change.
Does being tired mean I am insulin resistant?
Not by itself. Tiredness has many causes, including sleep, stress and thyroid problems. If you are tired and have risk factors, ask your doctor for an A1C or fasting glucose test.
Should I get tested if I feel fine?
If you have risk factors, yes. Being 45 or older, being inactive, having a close relative with type 2 diabetes or having overweight all raise risk, and feeling fine does not rule it out.
