Maca Root for Energy: Why It Leads the Sugar Defender Blend
Maca root energy is the sales promise on the first ingredient in the Sugar Defender blend, "Boosts Your Energy". Maca is listed first, so it holds the largest share of the 200 mg blend, up to 200 mg per mL. Only a few small human trials exist, and none concern blood sugar.

Label order01
Why is maca root first in the Sugar Defender blend?
Because the label must list the blend from most to least by weight, first place means maca has the largest share (21 CFR 101.36 (eCFR)).
That is the only reason we can state. The company does not explain its choice.
Sugar Defender lists "Maca (Lepidium meyenii) Root Extract" first of 22. The sales page says "Boosts Your Energy" beside it. The label itself makes no energy statement.
First place does not mean a big share. If maca held all 200 mg, nothing else could be in the blend, so the real figure sits somewhere below that. With 22 ingredients listed, an even split would give about 9 mg each, and maca is certainly above that.
The numbers02
How much maca root is in one serving?
Somewhere above 9 mg and below 200 mg per 1 mL, and the label does not narrow it further.
Think of it as a ladder. Maca stands on the top rung, and the other 21 ingredients share what is left beneath it. The label shows the order of the rungs but not their height.
The blend totals 200 mg. The first item cannot hold more than the whole, and it must hold at least as much as any other single line. That is a wide range, and a reader cannot work out a dose from it.
Compare the other top places: guarana at most 67 mg, African mango 50 mg and eleuthero 40 mg. Each is a ceiling, not a printed amount.

Eight amino acids sit in the bottom half of the list, the smallest shares.

Research03
Does maca root boost energy?
It has not been shown to. Memorial Sloan Kettering says only a few small human trials of maca exist (MSKCC, Maca).
They mostly looked at sexual function and menopause symptoms. Systematic reviews rate the evidence as limited, and MSK does not describe any blood sugar benefit.
| Sales line | "Boosts Your Energy" |
|---|---|
| Human trials | A few, small, mostly on other uses |
| Blood sugar data | None described by MSK |
| Place in blend | 1st of 22 |
| Printed amount | Not published |
That gap matters. A herb can be popular for centuries and still lack the kind of trial that shows a clear effect. Popular use is a reason to study a plant, not proof that it works, and the energy line should be read in that light.
Any lift you feel in the first weeks could come from the caffeine in guarana and green tea instead, which the label also lists and does not quantify (MSKCC, Guarana).
Safety04
Is maca root safe during pregnancy or with other conditions?
It may not be. Memorial Sloan Kettering says maca may not be safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding (MSKCC, Maca).
People with hormone-sensitive cancers should talk to a provider before using it. The Sugar Defender label also asks pregnant or nursing women to consult a physician, and adds that anyone taking other medication should do the same.
A supplement never replaces a prescription. If tiredness is new or constant, book a visit rather than reaching for a herb.
Takeaway05
Should maca be the reason you buy?
No. Maca is a traditional Andean food with modest research, and the energy line is a sales phrase.
If you try the drops, treat maca as one part of a blend whose amounts are hidden. Judge the bottle by the whole label, the 1 mL daily dose and the 60-day guarantee, not by one ingredient's reputation. If you want to feel more energetic, regular sleep, daily movement and a checkup for causes of tiredness have better evidence than any single root. Read the maca root ingredient page for the full profile.
The Sugar Defender who it is for page lists who should skip the bottle.
FAQ06
Maca questions
What is Lepidium meyenii?
It is the botanical name of maca, a root vegetable grown in the Andes. The Sugar Defender label lists a root extract of it, first in the blend, with no printed amount.
Does maca have caffeine?
Maca is not known as a caffeine source. In Sugar Defender the caffeine comes from guarana and green tea, and the label does not print how much. Do not assume maca adds a stimulant effect.
Is maca good for blood sugar?
There is no evidence for that. Memorial Sloan Kettering does not describe any blood sugar benefit from maca. Its studies mostly cover sexual function and menopause symptoms.
